The Towpath Volunteers Fife & Drum Corps

The Towpath Volunteers Fife & Drum Corps
In 2011, the fifes and drums of Saint Tropez were preparing to host the European Fife and Drum Festival in their beautiful city on the banks of the Mediterranean sea. They had an idea of inviting a group from the United States to attend, thus making this a World Fife and Drum Festival. They performed on-line searches of groups from the United States, looking for a family based group that had children as well as adults that represented American History. The group they choose was the Towpath Volunteers.

For the Towpath Volunteers, our first European Adventure will most likely be the greatest adventure. Our hosts, while keeping us busy, treated us like royalty and the people of Saint Tropez, most who were well aware that the Americans liberated Saint Tropez from German occupation during World War II, were open and friendly. The city of city of Saint Tropez was beautiful, rich with history and art, and some of the greatest foods and desserts on the planet.

The many hours spent with the fifes and drums of Saint Tropez created such an emotional bond between the two groups in just a few number of days that leaving this paradise was hard to do. The hours performing, relaxing and playing fifes and drum together made us one large happy family. Now, it is our turn to return the privilege of hosting this group in what we hope will be the adventure of a lifetime! Please come celebrate the rich and wonderful music performed by the Fifes and Drums of Saint Tropez, France with us at the Fife and Drum Friendship Festival.

History

The Fife and Drums of Saint-Tropez were created there 24 years ago (1990).

The musicians who accompanied the Bravades of Saint Tropez founded this association to play at tropéziennes traditional festivals.

The Fife and Drums of Saint-Tropez designed their costumes and composed original songs.

Fifes, are created from flutes small cane from Provence and are made by the musicians themselves in the traditional way. The drums are patterned from the Napoleonic-type strikes. The bass drum supplies the rhythm.

The Fife and Drum enliven all kinds of festivals, ceremonies, celebrations at local Provence and beyond.

The Fife Festival is held each year in a different region from all over Europe. The Fife and Drums of Saint-Tropez has hosted the Fife Festival three times 1991, 2000 and 2011. In 2011, they were the first festival to have a corps from the United States (The Towpath Volunteers Fife and Drum Corps of Macedon, NY).
